Self Identity Piece

"You cannot drive forward looking in the rearview mirror." - unknown

When first thinking of a self identity piece, I thought of where I am today and the journey I took to get here. I thought of my college experience and how even though I feel like it just started, it will soon be ending and a new chapter in my life will begin. This quote fits perfectly with my belief that if you live your life thinking back to the past and wishing you could change things, you will never be able to move forward. Don't be afraid to take a chance and believe in your ability to make decisions for yourself. Accept that everything in life happens for a reason and while those reasons may not seem clear now, just enjoy the ride and everything will fall into place.

Final Still Life!

This first painting I did was a “5 object still life” using oil paint on paper. The goals were to learn how to paint as far as the strokes, holding the brush and then tackling light and shadows. The design constraints were having a limited palette of only white and black, being confined to a certain size paper and the subject that I was painting. In this painting, I learned directional stroke and how you can add dimension to the objects by the direction you make your strokes. I had many challenges in this painting. The first was having a limited palette where I could only use black and white. The second challenge was that due to the shadows created by both the natural light and the spot light. Due to the lighting, I was only able to work on this painting around the same time of day each time when the shadows would be the same. One of the challenges I had was creating three distinct values to show the light and dark areas. In my last revision, I had to make sure I made these distinct values and made the shadows look realistic. I did not have the shadows dark enough closest to the objects, nor did the dark portion come far enough away from the object. I also had to work with the shape of the goblet-type object and the light hitting this object.
